Message from the Chair

Kia Ora everyone,

The season is fast approaching with our first weekend of patrols only 3 weeks away and the White Island Race kicking off next Saturday.

As things start to get busier around the place more people come and go from the club rooms which is great but its really important to keep in mind some key points:

- It's the responsibility of everyone to keep the club clean (cleaning products can be found in the cleaning cupboard)

- Changing rooms need washed down regularly

- The patrol room is not a store room. We don't want boards left in here

- Make sure you lock the club up after you use it. The club is alarmed between 10pm and 6am alongside the bar being alarmed 24/7. If you need to access any of these areas at a point in time please contact Cam, Tom or Jeff.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all around the club in the coming weeks.

Lifeguarding

You can find the draft patrol roster here: PatrolRoster2022_23.docx

If you have any feedback on this please get in touch with Niam or Joel as soon as possible so they can help find a solution. The club appreciates how much time our volunteer lifeguards give to the club and our community. We will continue to give our patrol captains a budget for things like food on patrols but you have any other suggestions about how we can make patrol better please let us know.

As noted in the calendar there are a number of upcoming courses which enable our guards to up skill or gain pre-requisites for other courses. If you have any interest in completing a Surf qualification then please don’t hesitate to get in contact with Niam, Scoob or Isaac.

Members should have received a link from surf lifesaving NZ around completing the theory component of the refresher online. If you are yet to receive this link, please reach out however if you have then it would be great if you were able to complete this before the season kicks off.

Reminder to all our PC's about the patrol captains briefing Friday 14th October at the club

Skill development

If you would like to know more about surf sports training please get in touch with either Brent Wolf, Brent Matehaere or Cam. Weekly sessions are being shared via messenger so if you would like to be included please reach out.

Juniors are doing board sessions at the Marina. Get in touch with Jon and Hamish to find out more.

Junior Surf

We are going to host an Open Day / social event on Saturday October 29th at 11am -3pm for junior families and any new families that want to join up. We'll have the bar open and a BBQ going. (This previously was at 4pm but time has now changed)

Continuing on from last season we keep our Junior surf sessions on a Sunday morning from 9am. The feedback was members enjoyed this and often the weather was better than a Saturday afternoon. Beach sessions will kick off on the 6th of November however in the meantime you can head up to Moana Pool and get that swimming fitness up or simply learn some technique to make swimming more enjoyable.

Sessions are on a Wednesday night from 6pm and it only costs $2 to enter the pool – far cheaper than normal rates so make the most of this!

White Island Race

The annual White Island race is locked in for the 22nd of October. Due to tides, there will be a 9am start for all craft with swimmers starting at 8.30am. Post the event there will be a prizegiving upstairs at the club where there are donated refreshments and the annual prizes handed out.

As always we need a strong event team to help out on the day in IRBS, collecting results etc. If you would like to be a helper that would be greatly appreciated.

We also need a couple of superstars to help with running a BBQ and ideally someone who has access to a sound system. If you could get in touch with Cam that would be greatly appreciated.

Whats on?
